On Isaac Newton and Ja Rule

The Scientific Method:

1. Define the question
2. Gather information and resources
3. Form hypothesis
4. Perform experiment and collect data
5. Analyze data
6. Interpret data and draw conclusions that serve as a starting point for new hypothesis
7. Publish results
8. Retest

1. I'm in a musical rut. Where can I find something fresh?
2. The dusty old high school-era CD case.
3. I'll rekindle an interest in something long forgotten.
4. Listened from home to work and back.
5. Total tracks heard = 5. Estimated total time = 9 minutes.
6. Rap is terrible. I stopped listening to these for a reason.
7. Voila.
8. No thanks.

Bliss

You've been asking me about trainhopping. I can't explain it any more than you can explain what it's like to hold your newborn baby or be in combat. Thousands of years of building language and it still falls short in our most defining moments.

Here's my best attempt - not at explaining, but translating. Look. Imagine. It's everything that repressed restless spirit in you wants it to be.

The Muddy River Boys

I had the pleasure of shooting the first ever Roots n' Blues n' BBQ Festival in Columbia this weekend. Festival organizers hoped for 30,000 visitors (which I thought was incredibly optimistic) and ended up drawing 50,000 to 60,000. Color me impressed.

Shouldn't have been that surprised - It doesn't get any better than blues and barbecue. I didn't quite see where roots fit in, but everyone has their passions I suppose.

I had a blast with Centralia's own Muddy River Boys all weekend; and I mean all weekend - they stay awake all night to keep an eye on the meat. That's the logic at least, sometimes I wondered how that was done while under the influence at a friend's cooker on the other side of the lot. They know what they're doing, though - their name was called twice during the awards ceremony.

Charcoal

L.T. Eastin sits on The Muddy River Boys' trailer-mounted cooker as the team sets up camp for the weekend.

Orange Haze

Under the glow of a streetlamp, Dave Snodgrass makes a late-night adjustment to "The Turbo," which collects escaping smoke and reinjects it into the cooker.

Working Hard/Hardly Working

As the patriarch of The Muddy River Boys, L.T. Eastin's (background) duties consist primarily of giving orders and advice to other team members.

Thermometer

Clint Eastin monitors the cooker's temperature in the middle of the night. The meats are slow cooked overnight to achieve optimal flavor, which requires team members to stay awake during the process.

Parsley

With 53 teams turning in similar entries, attention to detail is of the utmost importance. Dave Snodgrass hand selects and preens each individual piece of parsley to garnish the meats.

Rubber explodes out of the artificial turf as Jason Reda (left) sends an extra point out of Frank Lenti Jr.'s (center) hands and towards the uprights. Unfortunately for Reda and the Illini, the ball's trip was a brief one.
